hothouse EVENTS FOR 2008:
Wednesday, September 24: Are we talking ourselves into a Recession?
'UK Economy “worse than thought”' announces one headline; 'Britain on the brink of recession' announces another. Barely a day passes without an economic prognosis more dismal than the last – but are we in danger of talking ourselves into a recession? While many financial experts are indeed gloomy, other commentators, awaiting some 'fat cat' bloodletting, appear positively gleeful at the prospect of a recession.
But does this culture of doom-mongering actually catalyse a down-turn? Such talk certainly affects businesses' psyches, and, just as importantly, their budgets. However, within this environment, is austerity really the best policy; should businesses seek to buck the cultural trend of expecting the very worst?
LOCATION: London, SW1P. TIME: Registration at 6:30pm; debate starts 7pm.
